Conductivity is the ability of a substance to conduct an electrical curent. Conductivity will change when ions are introduced to the water from salts, acid, hard water, or soluble gases that ionize in solution. Salt water has a large number of ions and a high number of conductivity. Conductivity can also be used to estimate the salanity.
