Benthic Macroinvertebrates in Chimacum Creek

What are Benthic Macroinvertebrates?

Benthic macroinvertebrates are small living organisms living on the bottom of all waters, under rocks, mud, and weeds.

We are 6th graders from Chimacum Middle School in Chimacum, Washington.  Earlier in the school year we ran some tests to see whether or not our creek is healthy.  So far all the evidence point to our creek being moderatly polluted.  For a spacific list of our goups job, click here.

This chart shows the importance of keeping your creek healthy. On the left hand side are the the bugs; sensitive at the top and tolerant on the bottom. As the trees on the bottom slowly turn into tall city buildings the sensitive bugs quickly die out. Getting closer and closer to the city you see the bugs become moderatly sensitive, and then to tolerant bugs. Keep Your creek clean!!!!!
