IV Earths parts
A. The Mantle.
1. The mantle is a layer of hot rock.
2. The crust and the upper part of the mantle are alot alike, the upper most okf the mantle and crust together form a rigid layer called the lithosphere. In Greek litho means "stone". The lithosphere averages about 100 km.thick.
3. Temperature and pressure increase along with the depth. The heat and pressure make the part of the mantle just beneath the lithosphere less ridgid than the rock above. Like road tar softened by the heat and sun, the material tha forms this part of the mantle is somewhat soft, it can bend like plastic. This soft layer is called the athenosphere, in Greek athens means "weak"
B. The Core
1. Earths core consists of two parts , a liquid outer core and a solid inner core. The metals, iron, and nickel make up both parts of the core. The outer core is a layer of molten metal that surrounds the inner core. In spite of enormous pressure, the outer core behaves like a thick liquid. The inner core is a dense ball of solid metal. In the inner core, extreme pressure squeezes the atoms of iron and nickel so much that they can not spread out and become liquid.
C. The Crust
1. The crust contains rocks and mountains, soil , and water that cover large parts of earth.
2. The rocks get thicker as you go down further. The outer rind is thinner on the ocean floor, and thickest under mountains.
