What is a volcano

A volcano is a weak spot in the crust where molten material comes to the surface. Magma is a molten mixture of rock forming substances, gases, and water vapor from the vapor. When magma reaches the surface it's called lava. After lava cools it turns into solid rock. Volcanic activity is a constructive force that adds new rock to existing land which forms new islands.

Hot Spot Volcanoes:

A hot spot is an area where magma from a deep within the mantle melts through the crust like a blow torch. Hot spots often lie in the middle of continental or oceanic plates far from any plate boundary. Hot spots form under the continental. Yellowstone nat. park is a major hot spot under the north American plate. The last eruption was 75,000 years ago.
