I. Earthquakes.

A. Waves
1.There are three waves to an earthquake. The p wave, or primary wave, the S wave or secondary wave, and the surface wave.

B. Kinds of Stresses

1.Stresses are an important factor in earthquakes. They are part of causing an earthquake. There are three types of stress. Tension, like pulling apart warm bubble gum, compression, squeezes rock until it folds or breaks. Shearing, is when masses of rock head in opposite directions.

3. A change in the Earths volume is called deformation.

C. Kinds of Faults

 

  1. One kind of fault is called a strike-slip fault.That is where rocks on either side of the fault slip past each other with little up and down motion.
