The type of weathering in which rock is physically broken into smaller pieces is called mechanical weathering. mechanical weathering breaks rock into pieces by freezing and thawing release of pressure growth of plants actions of animals.If you hit a rock hard enough with a hammer the rock will break into pieces some pieces of weathering in which rock is called mechanical weathering.These smaller pieces of rock have the same composition as the rock they came from if you have seen rocks that are peeling in layer then you have seen rocks that are under taking weathering mechanical weathering breaks rocks into pieces by freezing it.

In addition to mechanical weathering there is chemical weathering. Chemical weathering the procces that breaks through rock through chemical changes. the agents of chemical weathering include water, carbon dioxide, oxygen, living organisms and acid rain.
