About Us

Problem:

We wanted to know how many parts-per-millions of CO2 was in Chimacum Creek,

under the bridge next to Cenex.

Hypothesis:

We thought that Chimacum Creek didn't have very much CO2 in the water

because there were lots of bugs and fish in the water.

Experiment:

Materials:

Gloves
Goggles
Aprons
Test Tube
Phenolphalen Indicator 1%
Carbon dioxide Reagent B
Direct Reading Titrator

Procedure:

1. Fill test tube (0299) to 20ml mark with sample water.

Note: For best results test on freshly obtained water sample, and avoid splashing or prolonged contact with air.

2. Add 2 drops of Phenolphthalein Indacator, 1% (2246). If solution remains colorless, proceed to step 3. If soluction turns red no free CO2 is present.

3. Fill DRT (0380) with Carbon Dioxide Reagent B (4253DR). Insert Titrator into center hole of titration tube cap.

4. While gently swirling the tube, add 1 drop at a time until a faint pink color is produced and presists for 30 seconds.

Read test result were plunger tip meets Titrator scale. Record as Parts-Per-Million (ppm) Carbon Dioxide.

One thing that went wrong during our experiment was that one student put to many drops of Carbon Dioxide Reagent B until it was fully pink when it was NOT supposed to be.

Conclusion:

We got 6 ppm of CO2 in Chimacum Creek under the bridge next to Cenex, which means that there is 6 part of CO2 of 1,000,000 in Chimacum Creek.

The CO2 in the water was a little over half of CO2 and oxygen, so there are 6 ppm of CO2 in Chimacum Creek. We proved our that hypothesis is wrong because we thought that there would be less than 6 ppm in Chimacum Creek. 6 ppm is okay for fish and bugs to live with because it is good for plants, but it isn't bad for the fish and bugs because they breath out CO2 which gives life to the plants.

If we could redo this experiment we would have done it without any mistakes, like dumping the experiment out before finished, putting too much chemical in and other various things.

We learned that if there isn'ta high level of CO2 there are more chances of more fish to be able to live.
